Action:

The Cast conference is a professional development program offered for curriculum enhancement. Monitor other teachers who utilize technology in their curriculum in order to gain new ideas and implement new strategies.

Monitor:
In order to monitor this goal I will have to create a task check list and review my accomplishments on a weekly basis.

Evaluate:
Implement the strategies learned via professional development and outside sources with in the classroom. Have my students submit evaluation forms about the technology used and inform the teacher if the technology was beneficial to their creativity.

Goal:

  1. Do you think for your second goal of introducing concepts of internet safety and district policies it would be beneficial to have the parents involved at some level? A policy contract signed only by students really has no validity. I believe that it is just as important that parents understand the ins and outs of internet safety and district policies/consquences as is it for the students themeselves. A lot of the trouble students get into with the internet occurs outside of school and maybe educating the parents as well can help curb these problems.

I know my district sends paperwork home that parents need to review and sign before their child is allowed computer access. However, I do not think that most parents actually read the information thoroughly. I think some sort of presentation at back to school night (before classroom visits) would be a good place to start.

    What are your thoughts?

  2. Your second goal is one that many teachers do not give enough attention to when teaching their students web based activities. In my district the computers that are accessible to the students have filters and I believe that may be one of the reasons the teachers do not deem it necessary to spend more time teaching legal and ethical pratcices related to technology use.A delibrate attempt like yours to teach the students about safe and ethical practices is a step in the right direction. They need to be reminded that crediting sources is not only a sign of professionalism but not doing so can result in negative consequencies.

  3. I do like the idea of having students visit sites and evalulate if they are within district guidelines. However, I am wondering if you have a plan to prevent students from getting in trouble for accessing the inappropriate sites for the purpose of this assignment. If your school district is like mine, the district primarily leaves it up to the teachers to monitor student internet access even though they say they monitor access electronically, but I know many more heavily monitor electronically for inappropriate access through student log-ins.

  4. Yes I believe a contract should be signed and reviewed by parents. Websites in our district are filtered by a filter system. We are required to monitor student searches, however all of our students have their own user names and passwords. We can monitor keystrokes and website visits and both parents and students are aware of our security system.
